How We Work

If you've landed on this page, we're guessing you want to know more about why you should hand over $49 per month for only one record when you can probably get one shipped from a major retailer for about $40.

Put simply, it's about availability. Because of who our supplier is and how our relationship with them works (which is quite different to the way major retailers deal with theirs), we can often get our hands on one or two copies of very popular titles for either much less than major retailers or, in some cases, get hold of titles that major retailers can't or won't.

It's not about who is better or worse. We are simply serving different purposes. For us, it's about a personalised service. When you receive your Needle Drop box each month, you'll find a few extra goodies, a letter from us, and little things like that. You'll also have a record that means something to you. Maybe one you've been chasing for some time, or one that has sentimental value to you but isn't popular enough to rate with the major retailers.

Case Studies

By way of evidence let us provide some case studies, conducted on 25/3/2019. We searched particular titles on two major retailers' sites. We won't name them because we're not about defamation. Suffice to say one is a national electronics retailer that sells vinyl and the other is one of the most recognised national vinyl record retailers.

In the case of Snoop Dogg's classic 1994 hip hop must-own 'Doggystyle', we found it to be unavailable on the first site and available at a price of A$58 (free delivery) on the other. Whereas, we were able to source it from our supplier at a price that would mean we could provide it to a subscriber and still make our few dollars profit on their A$49 per month subscription fee.

Similarly, in the case of Blood, Sugar, Sex, Magik from the Red Hot Chilli Peppers, we found the title to be available at A$60 (plus delivery) on site and for a minimum of A$50 (free delivery) on the other.

For the sake of continuity and transparency, it was also found on this date that Abbey Road by the Beatles was available for A$38 (delivery included) on the first site and $40 (free delivery) on the other.

So Why Us?

Given all of that information, we hope it's clear why you'd choose a subscription to The Needle Drop. We are the subscription for you if you like the idea of a personalised vinyl service, run by humans not algorithms, that carefully selects the right record for you each month without leaving you out of pocket.
