Nathaniel Rateliff And The Nightsweats — Nathaniel Rateliff And The Nightsweats (LP)

Some records don't ease you in — they grab you by the collar from the first downbeat. Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats' self-titled 2015 debut is exactly that kind of record. Rooted deep in soul and rhythm & blues — the same fertile soil that gave us Otis Redding, Sam & Dave, and the whole Stax/Volt catalogue — this Denver outfit plays like they've been living in a Memphis juke joint their whole lives. Rateliff's raw, preacher-holler vocals ride a relentless tide of horns, organ, and driving percussion. From the anthemic stomp of S.O.B. to the aching tenderness of Wasting Time, every track on this record earns its place.
