John Mayer — Room For Squares (LP)

Before John Mayer became a blues obsessive — before Continuum, before the Trio — there was Room for Squares, the 2001 debut that announced a genuine pop-rock craftsman with roots running deeper than the radio knew what to do with. The fingerpicking on "Neon" alone hints at the acoustic blues tradition underneath the singer-songwriter polish, and "83" carries that same bittersweet intimacy that the great soul balladeers always understood.
